Learn why CSIC removed its approval of York College’s Immigration Practitioner Program and what this suspension means for affected students in Canada
The Immigration Practitioner Program formerly offered by York College of Industry and Technology (York College) is no longer approved by the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants (CSIC). This decision followed formal action taken by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
On July 26, the Superintendent of Private Career Colleges issued a notice suspending York College’s registration as a private career college under the Private Career Colleges Act. The notice also set out a proposal to revoke York College’s registration entirely. In response to this regulatory step, CSIC withdrew its approval of York College as an educational provider for the Immigration Practitioner Program.
Students who were enrolled in this program at the time of the suspension may be affected in several ways, including disruption of their studies and uncertainty about the recognition of their academic credits. CSIC has committed to assisting impacted students as much as possible with transferring their completed coursework and credits to another CSIC‑approved educational provider, so they can continue working toward their immigration practitioner qualification.
Prospective students are strongly encouraged to verify the current accreditation and regulatory status of any immigration practitioner training program before enrolling. Regulatory frameworks and oversight bodies have evolved since the time of this notice, and today the regulation of immigration consultants in Canada is overseen by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC). Always consult the official regulator and relevant provincial ministry to confirm that an institution and program are properly authorized and in good standing.
